Hello...Greetings from sunny Sydney! What a rollercoaster the past month has been. If you've been keeping an eye on my instagram @angelawhitelovesu you will have seen some of the marvellous creations I've been producing for the sensational Jessica Mauboy! Jess, her stylist/creative director (Mikey Ayoubi) and I have been working FIVE outfits for her Australian 'All The Hits Live' tour. As many of her fans are still in school, Jess wanted to create a glamorous, magical performance to show the audience that 'Dreams do come true!' This theme certainly rang true for me as I've always dreamed of creating stage outfits for pop stars and my goodness! What a show! It was wonderful to be able to use many of the materials I'd been collecting over the years and create the outfits I'd been imagining in my head, and then to see them manifest on Jessica and on the stage! It really felt amazing. Jessica Mauboy wearing Angela White Costume & Couture crystal skirt over custom designed pearl and fringe showgirl outfit. Greetings to you all and happy 2017!
It's been wonderful to start my year by personally meeting so many of you at the HEIA conference in Melbourne in January. It was very inspiring for me to meet so many teachers from all over the country and I'm really looking forward to paying many of you a visit this year. If you would like to hold a workshop or a Professional Development training day at your school please send me an email to:[email protected] with an idea of which term, month or date you would like to run the workshop. I'm currently taking bookings until the end of this year and it would be ideal to spend a week or two in each state and visit several schools in the one area (which will save on travel costs). Below are a recap of the objectives, content and costs: The workshops aim to help students: - Learn about how to make choices which support recycling and reducing waste in the environment. - Contemplate what their 'Dream Job' might be. - Express their creativity. - Learn how to sew, and reconstruct garments. - Produce items which could potentially lead into entrepreneurial enterprise. - A full-day workshop is from 9am-3pm. - Teachers will receive a resource package which includes pre and post workshop lesson ideas. - The cost of this day $350 for ten students and $25 for each student after that (plus GST). - Travel costs will be added if school is more than 30 minutes outside of Sydney CBD. It is ideal if students are capable sewers but not essential. The essence of these workshops is creativity! *There is a $50 discount for HEIA attendees who contact me before Friday April 14th, 2017. Hope to hear from you soon! Warmest wishes, Angie xo
April has been a bit surreal for me as I started the month on the cover of Access All Areas magazine! This wasn't an April Fool's Day joke. I am honoured to be featured on the cover and have an article in the magazine. You can read the April 16 edition HERE.
Heathers the Musical - Melbourne & Sydney
The darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and kiss Heather’s aerobicized ass… but J.D. has another plan.
Based on the cult teen comedy starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, Heathers was an 11 year old obsession of mine. I was mesmerised by the fashion so it was a dream come true for me to design the costumes for this show (for which I won a Sydney Theatre Award for)! Thank you so much for your love and support while I've been working so hard. It really lifted my spirits hearing from people who were enjoying the show and wanting to come to classes. What an incredible group of people to work with. Jess is an absolute delight! She's so real and cool and sweet and just a wonderful (and super talented) human. What a lady! I was working with the band and backing vocalists, styling them to look sharp next to Jess in her incredible, custom made outfits. You can catch the regional tour in January. It's a fantastic show so get out there and support Australian music and our very own, home grown pop star! Angie xo Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/revampedfashion http://www.facebook.com/angelawhitecostume Instagram: revampedfashionloves I have had the BEST week! Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School (on the Tweed Coast of northern NSW) flew me up to spend two days with them (this is where I took that beautiful sunset pic). How lucky am I?! The students were so creative and fun, and were getting into the spirit as many of them were Revamping 'festival outfits' for Splendor in the Grass. On the Saturday twelve teachers joined me (some of them drove for over an hour to reach me), for possibly the most productive Revamped Fashion workshop ever! It's great to know there are so many imaginative, skilled teachers in Australian high schools! I'm looking forward to visiting some of their schools next year.
So August is here and I wanted to let you know about all of the classes I'm teaching! Sew Make Create As part of Sydney Design Week I'm teaching SIX workshops atSew Make Create in Chippendale. 'Sew Sustainable' is a 4.5 hour beginning sewing course where basic skills will be taught. By the end of the session you will make a cushion cover! As well as these classes I'll also be teaching 'Learn to Sew Stretch' and 'Zippers and Skirts'. To celebrate Sew Make Create's 1st birthday, for this week only, you can SAVE 20% on August classes when you and a friend book. Click here to find out more. Hope to see you there. 13 Trips This event is blowing people away! it's a 1 hour entertainment extravaganza where the audience have no idea how it's going to go. Warmest wishes, Angie xo I've been getting busy with my gal ALPHAMAMA for her new fortnightly event 13 Trips. This is music. This is fashion. This is film. This is interactive art. This is Alphamama's Truth, Trips and Revelations album brought to life through the imaginations of her vibrant art collective. Check out the merchandise we've been making. You can come along to the party and buy a pair of these ALPHAMAMA Pimpin Shades, or you can come to the party and create your own 'Pimpin Shades' with me! I'm very excited about this first LIVE Revamped Fashion event. Hope to see you there :) I'm so excited to share the Revamped Fashion promo video! My incredibly talented friend Virginie Laverdure is a film maker and a visionary, and I'm so blessed to have her on my team. Thank you also to my wonderful students who participated in the video and said so many kind things about me! Finally, thank you to ALPHAMAMA for the wonderful soundtrack. I LOVE collaborating! I LOVE my life! :)
I manifested this dress. No joke! A few weeks ago I said to my friend, Elle "I want to look for electric blue sequined fabric today. I'm going to make a hot party dress! It's going to be above the knee and have big shoulders and it's going to be FABULOUS!" An hour later we discovered Love Story, a sensational pop-up vitage store in Surry Hills, and the 'Blue Tiger' dress was there! The fabric was incredible and the dress was in such good condition. The dress itself wasn't quite what I had imagined but this was great because it has given me the chance to Revamp it! As you can see, the dress was originally very rectangular and straight. It was also a bit long for me (below the knee). Now... I'm a curvy lady so I've created a solution where I've created shape in the waist, and I've shortened the dress whilst maintaining this fabulous Bam Bam hem - no cutting required! Step 1 Mark where you would like the new waist to be. *Measure from the hem up, to get the correct measurement the whole way around the waist. Use coloured thread to tack a running stitch around the waist. This is your fold line. Step 2 With right sides together, fold dress on the fold line. Step 3 Measure around your waist and cut a piece of elastic (2.5cm wide). Stitch the ends together to make an elastic band. Step 4 Place the elastic band in the crease of the fold line and pin folded fabric below the elastic. Step 5 Using a zipper foot, stitch around the waist, beside the elastic, so you create a casing. Voila! That's all it takes. This method is quick and easy and there is no cutting required.
*It's best to avoid cutting sequined material if you can, as reinforcing freshly cut sequins can be a long process. This week's Revamped D.I.Y ended up being a special treat for myself! I love hand beading and I've been doing it for years. I even do a bit of hand beading work for sensational Aussie designer Rachel Gilbert. I was updating my Winter wardrobe this week and came across this cool shirt at Zara. It was baggy and silky and had these cool shoulder pads which were exposed on the outside of the shoulders. Well I couldn't leave it just plain now could I, and I happened to have all of the crystals and beads I needed at home! This Revamp didn't cost me a cent! Something you may know about me is that I love crystals! If my sewing machine is having an off day, I sit my rose quartz crystal on it, have a break and when I get back to work, my machine is sewing like a dream (seriously, this has happened)! I was very excited to find in my box of beaded treasures, a rose quartz bracelet which was falling apart. What a find! Along with the rose quartz beads, I've included Swarovski crystals, fake pearls, silver seed beads, large sparkly glass beads from a necklace, and some plastic stars and other shapes which I found in a container of gems I got from Spotlight. I don't mind combining the good quality, expensive beads with some cheaper ones. As long as they're not too 'plasticky' I'll throw some in there. This keeps the cost down (which makes clients happy), and also takes some of the weight out. The expensive beads are often a bit heavier and can really weigh a garment down! I also like using stars. I'm such a sucker for stars! I'll never grow out of them. I love my new shirt. It's nice to know the healing energy of the crystals are sitting on my shoulders! I find that when I wear my own creations lots of people smile at me and talk to me about what I'm wearing. It's a wonderful way to make news friends and share with people what I do! If you're inspired to do some hand beading grab a needle and thread and put your favorite movie of TV show on! It's a great way to be still and calm. It's like meditating! * Just be sure to start and finish your threads off securely, and when you wash your beaded items it's probably best to dry clean or hand wash. As always, please share your creations with our Revamped community! Post your pics on the Facebook page and inspire others with your ideas :D I love to play around with this technique, experimenting with layers of various fabrics, colours and textures. A simple way to make Chenille is by layering fabric (practice with three), stitching diagonal lines across the grain, and then cut in-between the lines.
Have you experimented with creating your own chenille fabrics? I'd love to see your designs. As always, you can upload them onto our Facebook page and inspire the Revamped Fashion community!
